A
donation for "l'Afghane"
In the
prospect of acquiring a bronze statue of more than six feet in height, the
organization “Les Amis des Musées de Calais” called for tax-deductible
public donations.
They would
then grant the work of Art to the Museum of Arts of Calais.
“L’Afghane”
The work that
has retained the organization’s attention is a monumental lost-wax cast
designed and created by the French sculptor Jean Roulland in 2003.
The Museum of Calais is dedicating a room to Jean Roulland’s sculptures
right next door to the one consecrating Rodin’s work.
Its title
recalls that Calais is a land of migrations. Through its proud face,
“L’Afghane” also pays tribute to women along with humanity as a whole and
their ability to face life’s adversity and misery. Calais would highly
benefit from owning such a masterpiece.
Donation was
open to all, starting with the locals, who could own a part of this work of
art and proudly bring it to prosperity as they did with the Burghers of
Calais.
The donation
campaign involved Calais and the local area, the department and the
region Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France and Europe as much as companies and
private contributors alike. (
40.000 €)
“L’Afghane”
has been officially granted to the Museum of Arts of Calais. ( 2012/09/15)
